An Unusual Strike

The baseball strike of 1994–95, which kept the public from seeing the annual World Series, was not a typical labor dispute in which low-paid workers try to persuade their employers to grant a raise above their minimum wage. On the contrary, players who earned millions of dollars yearly, who were visible on TV commercials, drove expensive autos, and dined with presidents, withheld their essential skills until the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of our government were forced to devise solutions to the quarrel.

The team owners, a blend of lawyers, manufacturers, corporate executives, etc., felt that something had to be done about the huge salaries that the players were demanding. Since the talent beyond the major leagues was scarce, they had to start spring training in 1995 with a wholesale invitation to replacement players. The regular athletes returned in late April but there was a feeling that the strike could happen again.

⭐️ Lesson 21: Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS) ⭐️

🐈‍⬛ What are Coordinating Conjunctions?
Coordinating conjunctions are words that join two or more words, phrases, or independent clauses. They help to connect ideas smoothly.

Coordinating conjunctions make sentences clearer and more concise.
They show the relationship between ideas, such as addition, contrast, choice, or result.

🔎 FANBOYS is an acronym for the seven coordinating conjunctions:
- For (reason)
- And (addition)
- Nor (negative choice)
- But (contrast)
- Or (choice)
- Yet (contrast)
- So (result)

☝️ I wanted to go outside, but it was raining. (Contrast)
☝️ She studied hard, so she passed the exam. (Result)

Tip: FANBOYS join words, phrases, or independent clauses of equal importance!

🔵🔵🔵

Using Coordinating Conjunctions

How do coordinating conjunctions work?
🔑 They link parts of a sentence that are grammatically equal.

Basic Rule:
Word + FANBOYS + Word
Phrase + FANBOYS + Phrase
Independent Clause + FANBOYS + Independent Clause

☝️ Word + Word:
- I like tea and coffee.
- She is smart but lazy.

☝️ Phrase + Phrase:
- We went to the park and played soccer.
- He was tired but kept working.

☝️ Independent Clause + Independent Clause:
- She wanted to watch a movie, but I wanted to read a book.
- They can stay home, or they can join us for dinner.

Tip: When joining two independent clauses, use a comma before the conjunction!

🔵🔵🔵

FANBOYS:

🔎 F = For (Reason)
- Shows a reason or explanation.
- Example: She stayed home, for she was feeling sick.

🔎 A = And (Addition)
- Adds information.
- Example: I like apples and oranges.

🔎 N = Nor (Negative Choice)
- Presents an additional negative idea.
- Example: He did not call, nor did he send a message.

🔎 B = But (Contrast)
- Shows contrast or an unexpected result.
- Example: I wanted to go out, but it was raining.

🔎 O = Or (Choice)
- Presents an alternative or choice.
- Example: Do you want tea or coffee?

🔎 Y = Yet (Contrast)
- Shows contrast or an unexpected result, similar to "but."
- Example: It was raining, yet we continued our journey.

🔎 S = So (Result)
- Shows a cause-and-effect relationship.
- Example: She was hungry, so she made a sandwich.

Tip: Use FANBOYS to create complex and interesting sentences!

🔵🔵🔵

🧠 Commas with FANBOYS

When do you use a comma with FANBOYS?
🔑 Use a comma before the conjunction when joining two independent clauses.

Correct:
- She wanted to play, but it was too late.
- He studied hard, so he passed the test.

Incorrect:
- She wanted to play , and it was too late. (No comma needed for compound elements, like words or phrases.)

Tip: If the conjunction joins words or phrases (not clauses), don’t use a comma!

🔵🔵🔵

🐈‍⬛ Common Mistakes

I wanted to go, but, it was raining.
✔️ I wanted to go, but it was raining. (Only one comma before the conjunction!)

She is smart, and talented.
✔️ She is smart and talented. (No comma for two adjectives.)

He didn’t call, nor he texted.
✔️ He didn’t call, nor did he text. (Use the correct verb order after "nor.")

Tip: Remember the comma rule for joining independent clauses!

❤️‏﴿فَلَا يَحْزُنكَ قَوْلُهُمْ﴾

❤️“So do not let their words grieve you.”

🌙They will say things about you that are not true—ignore them!
Take comfort in those who came before you, for they were better than you!

🌙They called the Prophet ﷺ a sorcerer, a madman, and a liar.
They accused Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, of theft.
They accused Mary, the pure, of adultery!

🌙Keep this truth in mind:
No one is safe from people's tongues, no matter how righteous they are!

🌙People even claimed that Allah has a wife and a son—
Do you expect to be spared from their slander?

Good evening
🌙Spiritual messages🌙

more you count your blessings, the more they appear. Some people have everything, but they still feel empty. Others have little, but feel so rich. What's the difference? Gratitude. When you focus on what's missing, you'll always feel lacking. But when you focus on what's present, you'll always feel blessed. The more you recognize the good in your life, the more Allah increases The next time you catch yourself complaining, pause. Replace it with a moment of thanks. Because Allah SWT never takes without giving even more in return.

Good evening
🌙Spiritual messages🌙

For one month, millions of people across the world willingly give up food and water from dawn to dusk. But the real test isn't hunger, it's discipline. Ramadan teaches patience in a world that demands instant gratification. It teaches gratitude when so many take their blessings for granted. It reminds us that self-control is more powerful than self-indulgence. But here's the deeper truth. Ramadan isn't about deprivation, it's about clarity. When you silence the noise of the body, the soul speaks. When you empty your hands, your heart becomes full. When you stop feeding your desires, you start feeding your faith. It's a reset, a chance to step back from distractions, reflect on your purpose, and reconnect with what truly matters. When the month is over, the goal isn't just to return to life as normal. The goal is to carry the lessons forward, to live with more patience, more gratitude, and more discipline every single day. because Ramadan isn't just a month, it's a mindset. And those who embrace it don't just change for 30 days, they transform for life.
