Boskapen var en mycket viktig del av den fornskandinaviska kulturen. Ordet 'nötkreatur' där 'nöt' på ursprunglig fornsvenska betyder egendom. Kor har haft en sådan stor betydelse för oss genom tidsåldrarna att det kollektiva ordet för dem var synonymt med de saker man ägde av särskild betydelse och värde.
Detta ledde med stor sannolikhet till att Futharken (runalfabetets) första runa i runraden (efter dess första sex tecken), är just Fä (Fehu). Den äldre futharken har 24 runor och den yngre futharken har 16 runor. Fä finns än idag i framförallt ordet fäbod - precis som nöt betyder fä, utöver boskapen, även egendom.

Ancient sites and rune stones are protected by law in Scandinavia. Rune stones was often carved in memorial of a dead or fallen family member, and many stones are also erected and carved in memory of a road, a bridge building or after seafaring Vikings.

This magnificent ancient site is called Anundshög and is one of Sweden's foremost ancient sites with an area containing both rune stones, stone ships and burial mounds that reflects our history. The burial mound which name is Anundshög, is the largest one in Sweden with an diameter of 64-68 meters, and a height of 9 meters. It is located at Badelundaåsen, and was created sometime between 5th - 11th century AD.
The area here contains in total twelve burial mounds, fourteen erected stones, one rune stone (you can read more about it in previous post), and five stone ships. The biggest one is 53 meters long. This area was an important gathering place during pre-historic times. It was a cultural center for the western Mälardalen, and much important for trades during the Viking Age. 🌿 Idag den 22 September infaller Höstdagjämningen, en ursprungligen hednisk traditionsenlig högtid som firats i Skandinavien och i norra Europa där vi främst uppmärksammar årets skördar, förberedelser inför den mörka stundade årstiden och tar farväl av det ljusa halvåret. Solen står nu helt lodrätt mot ekvatorn vilket gör att dag och natt blir lika långa.
🌿 Ett Höstblot brukar vanligtvis uppmärksammas vid Höstdagjämningen eller vid Vinternätter för att välkomna höstens ankomst. Blotet riktas främst till Sunna, Oden och Freja. Kombineras Höstblotet med Skördeblotet kan man även rikta sig till skördegudar så som Tor, Siv och Frej. Hösten är kommen och vi får nu inhösta det vi har odlat under sommarhalvåret. Rökstenen - Ög 136, is a majestic rune stone located in Östergötland, Sweden. It's one of the most famous ones, impressively containing over 760 runes carved on both sides. According to older investigations, it was erected in 800 AD.
There are many different theories about the meaning of the rune stone, which is constantly changing due to new researches. But what we know is that it was carved and erected by a man named Varin, as a memorial to his dead son Vämod. Not much is known about these two men, but if Varin was the one who erected the stone, then he was a very skilled and experienced man, as he mastered both the older -and younger futhark. He really succeeded in turning the runestone into a work of art.

The ancient tradition named Vetrnætr (Winter Nights) occurs today. In the Ynglingasaga by Snorri Sturluson a blót called Winter Nights is mentioned. The Winter Nights Blót is referred as the first blót of Odin, and occurs on this day, three full moons before our Heathen Jul (Yule). This blót marks the beginning of the winter half year, and is one of the most important celebrations in our old heathen calendar.
The dates changes annually according to the full moon, and in our current Gregorian calendar, the first day of winter is considered to be the 14th of October here in Scandinavia. Winter Nights and the more famous Álfablót, is two separate blóts and do not occur at the same time. Álfablót is a private gathering for family and relatives, and occurs at the next full moon this year in Scandinavia.
