Day after day vs day by day

Day after day: a succession of days, one following the other without a break

Day after day went by, and still no message arrived.

Notice that day after day in the previous example is used as a subject (because it is followed by a verb [went]).

The adverbial use is the more frequent:
'We waited day after day, but the expected visitor never arrived'.

Day by day: each day, one following another.

Day by day the situation is improving.

The differences between this and day after day are:

(1) It thinks of each day separately and individually, whereas day after
day thinks of them as a continuous series

(2) That it can be used only adverbially, whereas day after day can be used as the subject of a verb (notice the examples for both expressions)

(3) It means all the time; a little at a time and gradually, whereas day after day means each day repeatedly (used especially when something is boring or annoying).

Day by day his condition is improved.
She hates doing the same work day after day.

Academic vocabulary:

In English, there are often two possible words for the same idea: an informal or neutral word (which is mostly Anglo Saxon in origin, such as ‘often’) and a more formal word (which is mostly Latin or French in origin, such as ‘frequently.’) In Academic English, we tend to use the more formal words, because they give the impression of professionalism and authority.

Some formal Vocabularies:

Consistently (all the time = less formal)
Major (big)
Contented (happy)
Conscientiously (with a lot of care)
Decline (get worse)
Negative (bad)
Considerably (a lot)
Significant (big)
Pursue (go after)
Prime (best)

OU ARE NOT ALONE (Michael Jackson)

Another day has gone
I'm still all alone
How could this be
You're not here with me
You never said goodbye
Someone tell me why
Did you have to go
And leave my world so cold

Everyday I sit and ask myself
How did love slip away
Something whispers in my ear and says

Chorus:
You are not alone
For I am here with you
Though you're far away
I am here to stay
You are not alone
I am here with you
Though we're far apart
You're always in my heart
You are not alone

All alone
Why, oh

Just the other night
I thought I heard you cry
Asking me to come
And hold you in my arms
I can hear your prayers
Your burdens I will bear
But first I need your hand
So forever can begin…

Chorus.

Whisper three words and I'll come runnin'
And girl you know that I'll be there
I'll be there

Chorus.
I have never met a man so ignorant that I couldn't learn something from him.”
-Galileo Galilei

M:Hi, Jane! Have you heard about the new laws to help people recycle?

W:I heard about them on the news last night. I don't think I like them.

M:The government wants to keep the environment clean by recycling paper, metal, and glass instead of throwing these things away.

W:But who wants to pay an extra 50 cents each time you buy a cup of coffee? That's a lot of money!

M:50 cents? It's only five cents extra for a paper cup.

W:I thought it was 50 cents!

M:No, it's only five cents. Don't worry. And you can get your money back when you return the cup.

W:That's fair. Well, maybe the government is right, after all. I'll return all the paper coffee cups I use from now on.

M:Good! We all need to recycle. It helps to keep the environment clean.

🎵 LYRIC 🎶

No limit in the sky
That I won't fly for ya (for ya, for ya, for ya)
No amount of tears in my eyes
That I won't cry for ya (for ya), oh no
With every breath that I take
I want you to share that air with me
There's no promise that I won't keep
I'll climb a mountain, there's none too steep

When it comes to you
There's no crime
Let's take both of our souls
And intertwine
When it comes to you
Don't be blind
Watch me speak from my heart
When it comes to you
Comes to you

Want you to share that
(When it comes to you)

Cupid ain't a lie
Arrow got your name on it, oh yeah
Don't miss out on a love
And regret yourself on it, oh (oh, oh)
Open up your mind, clear your head
Ain't gotta wake up to an empty bed
Share my life, it's yours to keep
Now that I give to you all of me, oh

When it comes to you
There's no crime
Let's take both of our souls
And intertwine
When it comes to you
Don't be blind
Watch me speak from my heart
When it comes to you
Comes to you

Want you to share that
(Share) when it comes to you
Want you to share that

When it comes to you (to you)
There's no crime
Let's take both of our souls
And intertwine
When it comes to you
Don't be blind
Watch me speak from my heart
When it comes to you
Comes to you (you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you)
